1. Who This Case Study Is About

This is about someone I'll call Maria. She joined The Scaling Society earlier this year while working full-time as a healthcare admin, raising two kids, and running on maybe six hours of sleep a night.

She wasn't trying to blow up. She wanted $2,000 to $3,000 a month to cover her car payment, her kids' activities, and actually start saving something.

Six months later, she hit $3,200 in monthly sales with $832 net profit. Consistent, real money, built in 8 to 10 hours a week.

Here's exactly what she did.

2. Where She Started: $800 and No Experience

Maria found FBA the way most people do: YouTube at 11 PM after the kids were in bed. She spent two months watching videos before she spent a dollar.

That's the trap. You can watch sourcing videos for a year and never actually learn to source. At some point you have to put money in and make mistakes.

She had $800 set aside. Tight, but workable if you pick the right categories from the start. If you're in the same position, read how to start Amazon FBA with $500 first. That post covers the exact account setup and beginner-friendly categories to focus on when capital is limited.

3. Month 1: Getting Ungated and Sending Her First Shipment

The first thing Maria did was get ungated in Nike. That cost her $89 through a legitimate ungating service.

I tell every beginner the same thing. If you're not ungated in major name brands, you're cutting yourself off from the best leads. Yes, it costs money. Pay it anyway.

"Just make the investment. If you do it this way it's going to cost you $89 to get ungated in Nike... these are the products that we want to find. So you go on Amazon, you type the name." Free 20-Hour Amazon FBA Course, March 2025

Maria spent the $89, got approved, and found her first real lead within the first week searching Nike SKUs. She sent 12 units to FBA in week three. Small shipment, but the system was running.

4. The Sourcing System She Uses (8 to 10 Hours a Week)

Maria sources Monday nights, Wednesday nights, and Saturday mornings. That's her entire week. Each session is 2 to 3 hours.

She runs Tactical Arbitrage on a keyword filter routine I set up for her. Her criteria: minimum 30% ROI, at least 10 sales per month on Keepa, and a price history that doesn't show a recent spike.

She's not looking for home runs. She looks for boring, steady products that move 15 to 30 units a month at $4 to $8 net each. The math on boring: 20 products at 20 units per month at $6 net is $2,400 a month. A few better performers and you're at $3,000 without changing the process.

The full filter setup is in the online arbitrage sourcing guide. Start there before you open Tactical Arbitrage.

5. How Keepa Stopped Her From Buying at the Wrong Time

Maria's first two months were rough because she kept buying products when the price was temporarily high, then watching it tank right after her shipment arrived at FBA.

This is the single most common beginner mistake in online arbitrage. Everyone makes it at least once.

"Things just like history just repeat itself. This product went up to 55 offers in August and same thing when there was the sale during Black Friday... it went down to pretty much the same level. This is something you could have figured out." Online Arbitrage Sourcing Secrets: The Real Reason Your Leads Tank, Dec 2023

Once she learned to read 12 months of Keepa price history before every buy, her return rate dropped and her average ROI went from 18% to 34%. Same effort, better decisions. The Keepa guide for Amazon sellers walks through exactly what to look for.

6. Her First $1,000 Month

Month three. Maria hit $1,100 in sales and $280 net profit.

Not impressive on paper. But it proved the system worked. She had repeatable leads, inventory moving, and zero returns that month. More important: she could trace every unit back to a specific sourcing decision. That's the foundation you need before you scale anything.

She took that $280 profit plus another $200 from her paycheck and put it straight back into inventory. The rule at this stage: every dollar that comes out goes back in until you've built enough buffer to pay yourself. Pulling money too early is how you stall out at $1K forever.

7. Scaling From $1K to $3K Without Quitting Her Day Job

Months four through six were about volume, not strategy changes.

Maria didn't overhaul her sourcing system. She just bought more units of the same types of leads she already knew worked. Inventory spend went from $400/month to $1,100/month. Sales followed.

She also started batching prep work. One big session every 10 to 14 days instead of prepping every shipment as it arrived. This alone saved her 3 to 4 hours a month without changing anything else.

Time investment: 8 to 12 hours a week depending on the week. She never sourced when she was exhausted, because that's when you make bad buys.

8. The Real Numbers Behind Her $3,200 Sales Month

Month six, broken down:

  • Gross sales: $3,200
  • Cost of goods: $1,620
  • Amazon fees (FBA + referral): $640
  • Tactical Arbitrage subscription: $89
  • Keepa subscription: $19
  • Net profit: $832

That's a 26% net margin on sales. Not exceptional, but solid for a beginner still dialing in her best categories. Her goal for month nine is $5,000 in sales. At 26% net, that's $1,300 take-home. Her car payment is $480.

For a full breakdown of how Amazon fees eat into your margins at different price points, the FBA profit margins guide has the exact fee structure.

9. What a Real Week Looks Like for Her

Monday night, 9 PM to 11 PM: Sourcing session on Tactical Arbitrage. She places orders on anything that clears her checklist. Closes the laptop and goes to bed.

Wednesday night, 9 PM to 11 PM: Check inbound shipments, handle any account issues, do a second sourcing pass on different supplier categories.

Saturday morning, 8 AM to 11 AM: Full sourcing session, prep inventory that arrived during the week, create removal orders on anything sitting over 60 days, ship out.

That's the whole week. She doesn't check Seller Central every hour. She doesn't obsess over BSR on individual products. She runs the system on schedule and leaves it alone.

10. The Mistakes She Made in the First 60 Days

She bought without checking sell-through rate. Three products sat in FBA for over 90 days and racked up storage fees before she pulled them.

She overbought on one lead. Bought 30 units of something that sold 5 per month. Always check sales velocity in Keepa, not just the current BSR number. A great BSR today can mean nothing if the sales history is thin.

She missed two suppressed buy boxes for two weeks. Both listings went suppressed while she wasn't watching, and she didn't catch it until a coaching call. Two weeks of sales gone.

None of those mistakes killed her business. They were expensive tuition. The key is catching them fast and not repeating them. Read the 7 Amazon FBA beginner mistakes before you send your first shipment to avoid paying the same tuition.

11. Can You Actually Build This While Working Full-Time?

Yes. But only if you accept what the business actually is in year one.

It's not passive income. It's a part-time job that pays like a part-time job at first. The difference from an actual second job is that it compounds. Your time stays roughly constant while your revenue grows.

"My theory is I'd rather make 20K a year with upside potential and enjoying it every day than [more money doing something you hate]." LIVE Amazon FBA Online Arbitrage Sellers Hangout, April 2024

Maria gets this. She's not trying to replace her income in 90 days. She's building something that scales. At $3K/month in sales today, she's on track for $8K to $10K/month by month 18 if she stays consistent and keeps reinvesting.
