1. What Amazon Actually Means When They Say "Suspended"
When that email lands in your inbox, your stomach drops. Before you start hammering the support chat or firing off an angry appeal, you need to understand exactly what you're dealing with.
Amazon uses "suspended" and "deactivated" almost interchangeably in their notices, but they're not the same thing. A suspension means your selling privileges are paused. You can still log in, access your inventory data, and contact support. A deactivation is a harder reset. Amazon has been handing these out specifically for generic listing violations, and reversing one is significantly more difficult.
Knowing which penalty you got determines every next move. Read your suspension notice carefully. The specific violation code in that email is your roadmap. If you skip that step, everything else goes sideways.
2. The First 24 Hours: Do Not Make Dumb Mistakes
"Your Amazon account got suspended. Do not panic. I need you to do one thing and one simple thing. Make sure that you understand everything I'm saying. If you need to watch this video multiple times, it is going to stop you from making dumb mistakes that can cost you your Amazon accounts forever." Chris Mangunza, Amazon Account Suspended: DO THIS TO GET REINSTATED (Feb 2024)
The single biggest mistake sellers make in the first 24 hours is submitting a garbage appeal. They're panicking, they don't fully understand the reason code, and they fire off something that actually makes Amazon's case against them stronger.
Read every word of your suspension notice. Then read it again. Do not submit multiple appeals back to back. Amazon's Seller Performance team sees the full paper trail, and spamming them with three weak appeals in 48 hours flags your case as a problem and makes reinstatement harder.
Take 24 to 48 hours to understand the violation before you write a single word of your Plan of Action. Patience here saves you months.
3. Identify Exactly Why Amazon Suspended You
Amazon suspends FBA sellers for specific, documented reasons. The most common violations for online arbitrage sellers are:
- Inauthentic or counterfeit invoice flags
- Intellectual property (IP) complaints from brand owners
- Generic listing violations (selling branded items on generic ASINs)
- High order defect rate (ODR above 1%)
- Related account violations (Amazon linking you to a previously suspended account)
Your suspension notice names the specific ASIN or policy violation in most cases. If the notice is vague, open your Account Health dashboard before writing anything. The violation details are usually sitting there waiting for you.
Do not guess. If you don't know exactly why you got suspended, your appeal will miss the target and get rejected, which eats more time off the clock.
4. Why You Can't Email Seller Performance Directly
"The health support team is your only bridge, your only way to kind of communicate, to kind of talk to the Seller Performance team when you are suspended. The Seller Performance team is the team that reviews your appeals, your accounts. You cannot talk directly to them. They used to have an email address where you could talk to them. This email address is not active anymore. The only way to contact the Seller Performance team is either through sending an appeal or through the health support team." Chris Mangunza, Amazon Account Suspended: How To Use The Health Support Team (Jan 2023)
This is the part most sellers don't know. The direct Seller Performance email address that used to exist is dead. Any email you send there goes nowhere. It doesn't bounce, it just disappears.
Your two paths to Seller Performance right now: submit a formal appeal through the performance notification in Seller Central, or go through the Account Health Support team. That's it. There is no back channel, no secret escalation path.
5. How to Use the Account Health Support Team
The Account Health Support team is a useful resource, but it comes with real limitations. Some reps know the appeal process inside out. Others will give you incorrect information that sends you down the wrong path and costs you weeks of additional waiting time.
Use them to get case status updates and to understand what specific documentation Amazon needs from you. Do not use them to submit your actual appeal or to argue your case. The formal written Plan of Action, submitted through the appeals portal, is the vehicle for that.
For minor violations, an Account Health Support rep can sometimes get your account reinstated in a single call. For serious violations like fraud flags, counterfeit accusations, or repeat policy violations, you need a proper written POA. A rep cannot override those decisions at their level.
6. How to Write a Plan of Action That Actually Gets You Reinstated
Amazon wants three things in every Plan of Action: what happened, what you did to fix it immediately, and what you're doing so it never happens again. That's the entire formula.
Keep it short. Keep it specific. Amazon's reviewers process hundreds of POAs every day. A wall of text with emotional appeals about how many years you've been selling or how this is your livelihood is not going to help you. Two or three focused paragraphs for each section is the target.
The POA structure that works:
- Root cause: the exact reason this happened, stated plainly and without excuses
- Immediate action: what you did the moment you discovered the problem
- Preventive measures: specific, concrete steps to stop it from repeating
For an inauthentic invoice suspension, your POA needs your actual supplier invoices, a clear explanation of your sourcing process, and a specific procedural change going forward. Something like: "We've implemented an invoice verification checklist that must be completed before any new ASIN is listed." That's concrete. "We will be more careful" is not.
One hard rule: do not admit to wrongdoing you did not do. But do not argue with Amazon either. Address the concern directly, show you understand it, show you fixed it, and stop writing.

"Amazon is cracking down on some stuff and if you do not do what I'm telling you to do today you could get your account suspended. Amazon is actually not just suspending but totally deactivating accounts because of generic listings. They consider it as fraud when people sell branded items on generic listings." Chris Mangunza, Do This Or Your Amazon Seller Account Will Be Suspended For Q4 (Oct 2023)
Generic listing violations caught a lot of sellers off guard in Q4 2023 and the crackdown has continued since. If you match a branded product to a generic ASIN, Amazon treats that as fraud. Not a policy slip. Fraud. They're not just suspending for this. They're deactivating accounts, which carries a harder penalty and is much more difficult to reverse.
The fix is an inventory audit. Go through every active ASIN and confirm that branded products sit on properly branded listings. If you find a mismatch, remove that inventory before Amazon flags it. Do not wait.
This is exactly the kind of compliance work the Scaling Society framework builds into the operations layer. Catching mismatches before Amazon does is the difference between a five-minute fix and a six-month nightmare.
8. When You Get Hit With an Inauthentic Invoice Suspension
"I submitted it like Friday. Friday nothing, Saturday nothing, Sunday nothing. Then on Monday morning I went to eat with my girl, and then we came back, we were watching TV and I received an email: your Amazon account got suspended due to fraud or inauthentic invoice. I was pissed off. And because of that I was suspended for like close to six months. Those suspensions... this is why guys." Chris Mangunza, My Amazon Account Got Suspended (Jul 2023)
Close to six months. That's how long an inauthentic invoice suspension cost Chris. The reason it dragged on that long was the severity of the violation code. Amazon treats fraud flags at the top of the seriousness scale, and the appeals process reflects that.
Your invoices have to be clean. They need your full name, your business name, the supplier's name and address, the product names, quantities, unit costs, and invoice date. Screenshots from a retailer's website or order confirmation emails do not qualify as invoices for this purpose.
If you source through online arbitrage retail channels, start building documentation habits now, before you ever need them for an appeal. Some sellers intentionally establish one or two wholesale relationships specifically to have clean invoice trails on their highest-velocity ASINs.
9. Submitting Your Appeal and What Happens Next
Once your POA is written, submit it through the performance notification in Seller Central. Find the suspension email in your Performance Notifications, click "Appeal", attach your POA and any supporting documents, and submit. That's the only official channel.
After submission, you're waiting. Amazon's timeline is not predictable. Some sellers hear back in 48 hours. Others wait three weeks. Do not submit follow-up appeals while you're in the queue. It resets the clock and signals that you don't understand your own case.
If you get a rejection, read it carefully before doing anything else. Amazon's rejections usually name specifically what's missing from your POA. Revise based on that exact feedback, resubmit, and wait again. You typically get multiple attempts before Amazon closes the case permanently.
10. If Your First Appeal Gets Rejected
A rejected first appeal is common. It does not mean your account is gone. It means Amazon needs more specifics, better documentation, or clearer preventive measures than what you submitted.
Most rejections come back with one of these notes: your root cause isn't specific enough, your evidence doesn't support your claims, or your preventive steps aren't convincing. Treat every rejection letter like a revision request. Address the exact gap they named and resubmit.
If you've submitted three or more appeals and keep getting rejections without clear feedback, contact the Account Health Support team and ask directly what's missing from your case. Some situations also benefit from working with a professional Amazon suspension appeal service. That costs $500 to $2,000 depending on the case. Losing six months of revenue costs far more.
Many account health problems start as avoidable sourcing or listing errors that pile up over time. Reviewing the FBA mistakes that lead to suspensions helps you fix the underlying habits, not just the current appeal.
11. Opening a Second Amazon Account While You're Suspended
"You just create an account regularly and you're just going to get suspended because Amazon is going to be able to link your accounts. And if they link your account with an account that was suspended, you are going to get the new account suspended and you will not be able to use it. This is why you need to be super careful." Chris Mangunza, How To Open A Second Amazon Seller Account After Being Suspended (Jan 2023)
Chris has a second Amazon seller account. He's been open about that. But the setup is what makes it work. Amazon is very good at linking accounts. Same IP address, same browser fingerprint, same payment method, same business address. Any of these connections can get your new account flagged immediately as a related account.
Chris uses a completely separate computer with a different IP address specifically for the second account. Not the same machine, not just a different browser. A separate machine, separate network, separate everything. The setup takes some effort but it keeps the accounts technically isolated.
One important note: opening a second account while your first is under an active appeal is a gray area in Amazon's policies. Research the current rules carefully before proceeding. Getting a second account flagged makes your original appeal significantly harder to win.
12. Plan B: Keep Revenue Coming In While You Wait
While your appeal is in progress, you still have a business to run. If your entire monthly revenue depends on this one Amazon account, this suspension just taught you something expensive about single-point-of-failure businesses.
Plan B options for the 4-to-12 weeks your appeal might take:
- Start selling on Walmart Marketplace or eBay. Margins aren't as strong, but cash keeps moving.
- Use the downtime to fix your invoice documentation and audit every supplier relationship you have.
- If inventory is stuck at FBA, submit a removal order so you control it instead of paying long-term storage fees.
- Build one or two wholesale accounts that give you proper invoice trails for your top ASINs going forward.
- Review your online arbitrage sourcing process for any compliance gaps before you're back online.
The sellers who handle suspensions best are the ones who never had 100% of their income on one account. If you're ready to build that kind of structure from the ground up, join the next Thursday training and see how the Scaling Society approach handles account risk from day one.
