1. Why Product Selection Makes or Breaks Your OA Business
Most people who fail at online arbitrage picked bad products. They chased the wrong categories, bought brands with IP complaints waiting to happen, or ignored BSR data that told them a product barely sells.
I've been running OA since 2019. I do over $100K a month in revenue. Product selection is still the biggest lever in this business, more than your software, your capital, or your connections.
The categories below are where I source now, along with the exact criteria I run every deal through before I hit add to cart. Start with the pillar if you want the full model first: Online Arbitrage on Amazon: The Complete Guide.
2. The Criteria Every Good Deal Must Pass
Category doesn't matter if the deal fails these checks.
Every potential buy goes through this list:
- BSR under 150,000 in the main category (under 50,000 is the sweet spot)
- At least 30% ROI after all Amazon fees
- Minimum $3.00 net profit per unit, targeting $5.00+
- Amazon is not on the listing, or Amazon is consistently out of stock
- No IP complaint flags on the ASIN's history
- Eligible for FBA (not oversized, not hazmat, not restricted)
I use Keepa to verify price history and BSR over the last 90 days. A BSR under 100K for three straight months means the product sells month to month, not just during a spike. That's the data you want before you commit capital.

3. Home and Kitchen - High Volume, Easy to Source
Home and Kitchen is the biggest category on Amazon. It's ungated for most sellers, and the sheer number of SKUs means mispriced products sit on retailer sites at any given time.
I source this category from Target, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond liquidation channels, and direct brand overstock sales. Margins run 35-50% ROI on items like:
- Silicone kitchen tools: spatulas, baking mats, prep bowls
- Coffee accessories: pour-over kettles, filters, grinders
- Storage containers and drawer organizers
- Small appliances that hit clearance pricing
A recent deal: a kitchen scale I bought for $8.99 on a retailer site, selling on Amazon at $24.99. After fees, net profit was $9.40 per unit. I bought 30 units. That's $282 profit from one product, one sourcing session.
4. Beauty and Personal Care - High Margins When You're Ungated
Beauty is trickier because of brand gating. Once you're approved on the main brands in this category, the dollar margins are strong. High price points mean even 30% ROI puts serious money in your pocket per unit.
What works in Beauty for OA right now:
- Hair tools (straighteners, curling wands) during seasonal sales
- Skincare sets on clearance at Ulta or CVS
- Sunscreen and SPF products from April through August
- Electric shavers and grooming kits during holiday promotions
Check brand restrictions in Seller Central before you source, not after. Buying 25 units of something you can't list is two days of hassle and tied-up capital. One click in Seller Central prevents it.
5. Toys and Games - Seasonal but Consistently Profitable
Toys are seasonal, and seasonal means predictable profit windows. Q4 is the obvious peak, but the right toys move year-round. LEGO sets, board games, and collectible figures hold their BSR through the summer.
The best OA plays in Toys:
- LEGO sets going EOL (end of life) - prices spike hard when Amazon and big-box stores stop carrying them
- Popular board games during Target or Walmart weekly sales
- Educational toys from brands like Melissa and Doug
- Card games: Exploding Kittens, Unstable Unicorns, What Do You Meme
Target is my top source for Toys. Target Circle and cashback portals stack on top of each other. A 4-5% cashback rate on a $300 Toys order adds $12-15 to margin before you count the price spread.
6. Health and Wellness - Steady Demand, Repeat Buyers
Health and Wellness demand spiked in 2020 and never fully came down. Vitamins, supplements, and fitness accessories are high-volume, repeat-purchase categories. The BSR on proven products holds flat month to month.
What sells well right now:
- Resistance bands and yoga mats - lightweight, good margins, low storage fees
- Pill organizers and pill cutters - cheap to source, rock-solid BSR
- Name-brand melatonin gummies and sleep supplements
- Blood pressure monitors and pulse oximeters from recognized brands
Supplements require category approval from Amazon. Get that handled before you buy inventory. Once you're approved, margins stay consistent and you'll replenish the same SKUs month after month.
7. Sports and Outdoors - The Underrated OA Category
A lot of sellers avoid Sports and Outdoors because they picture heavy dumbbells and oversized kayaks. Light accessories in this category run strong margins and most competitors miss them.
Best products to source in Sports and Outdoors:
- Yoga and fitness accessories under 2 lbs: blocks, straps, foam rollers
- Hydration bottles and tumblers (the market for Stanley competitors is massive)
- Camping accessories: headlamps, fire starters, folding utensils
- Golf accessories: tees, ball markers, gloves, rangefinder accessories
The Stanley tumbler trend paid out for sellers already sourcing hydration products. They knew the category and they were positioned when demand jumped. Park yourself in the right categories long enough and trends pay you without extra work.
8. Pet Supplies - Owners Spend Without Hesitating
Pet owners are one of the most reliable buyer segments on Amazon. Pet Supplies is a massive category with strong OA opportunity, especially in consumables that people reorder every 30-60 days.
Top OA picks in Pet Supplies:
- Dog and cat treats from name brands during PetSmart or Chewy sales
- Grooming tools: deshedding brushes, nail grinders, slicker brushes
- Flea and tick treatments during spring and summer months
- Interactive toys and puzzle feeders for dogs and cats
Consumables are the best product type for OA because demand is flat and predictable. A bag of dog treats selling 400 units a month isn't going to tank. The BSR stays stable and you can plan your inventory buys around it.
9. Office Supplies and Electronics Accessories
Office supplies got a reputation for thin margins from sellers sourcing commodity pens and copy paper. Name-brand electronics accessories in this space run different numbers.
What works here:
- Printer ink and toner cartridges - people need these constantly and buy fast
- Monitor stands, desk organizers, and ergonomic accessories
- USB hubs, charging cables, and wall adapters from brands like Anker and Belkin
- Whiteboards and dry-erase markers during back-to-school season
I've bought Anker chargers at $9.99 during a sale and sold them on Amazon at $22.99. Net profit: $8.30 per unit. I bought 50. Electronics accessories work when the brand is trusted and the sale price is real. Keep Keepa open, verify the 90-day average sale price, and pull the trigger fast. These deals move.
10. The Tools That Find These Products Fast
Finding OA products manually is a grind. The sellers doing real volume use software to cut research time from hours to under 30 minutes per session. I built a custom target list with my team that feeds me leads every day.
I covered the software stack in a training from April 2024:
"What is the best online arbitrage sourcing software to use right now? What software can you use to find tens of leads daily? I'm going to share with you the software that I've been using... This is the place where I get most of my leads, and I'm going to explain to you guys how it works and why it is a must-have in your software stack for Amazon FBA and online arbitrage." The Best Online Arbitrage Sourcing Software: 20+ Leads/Day - Apr 2024
The short stack: a dedicated deal-finding tool for lead generation, Keepa for price and BSR verification, and a cashback portal active on every single purchase. I break down the full software tier list in the best OA sourcing software guide.

Reserve My Free Seat →11. Cashback Stacking Changes Every Deal's Math
New OA sellers skip this. When you source online, you stack cashback on every order. You can't do that in a store. That's one real advantage OA has over retail arbitrage.
"Get 4.2 percent of cashback so this spring will cost 210.48 - so you can see how easy it is to increase our profit margins. You cannot do that when you do retail arbitrage. And this is why I believe online arbitrage is a better model." Online Arbitrage vs Retail Arbitrage - Which is Better? - Jan 2023
4.2% cashback on $1,000 of sourcing is $42 added to deals you were already placing. Run $5,000 a month through a cashback portal and you've added $210 to your bottom line without sourcing a single extra product. Stack Rakuten, Ibotta, and credit card rewards on every order.
I go deeper on the model comparison in the OA vs retail arbitrage breakdown.
12. When to Source - The Sunday Rule Every OA Seller Should Know
New OA sellers source randomly, hitting retailer sites whenever they think of it. There's a better rhythm, and it starts with knowing when deals appear.
"If you are an online arbitrage seller, your weeks start on Sunday and not on Monday. Why? Because most websites release their new weekly ads on Sunday." How to Source Products for Online Arbitrage at TARGET - Apr 2023
Sunday morning is sourcing time. Hit Target Circle, Walgreens weekly ads, CVS ExtraCare deals, and Walmart Rollbacks first thing. By Monday morning you've locked in the best deals before most competing sellers even check their email.
I document that entire Target sourcing session step by step in the Target OA sourcing walkthrough.
