1. Why Beauty Is the Category You Need to Get Into
Beauty is one of the highest-margin, fastest-turning categories on all of Amazon. Lip balms, skincare, shampoos, serums - people buy these on repeat every few weeks. And because Amazon gates the category, most new sellers never even try.
That's your edge. If you're serious about online arbitrage on Amazon, Beauty is one of the first restricted categories worth unlocking. Margins of 25-40% are common on the right SKUs. You just have to get past the gate first.
I've sourced in Beauty for years. It's consistently one of the strongest categories for OA. The process to get approved is not complicated. It just takes a few intentional steps that most sellers skip.
2. How Amazon Gating Actually Works in Beauty
When Amazon says you're "gated" in a category, it means you need approval before you can list products there. Beauty operates on two levels of gating: the category level and the brand level.
That means two things. First, you need top-level Beauty approval. Second, even after that, individual brands like Burt's Bees, CeraVe, or Topicals may need their own separate approval requests.
The good news is that getting the top-level Beauty approval often clears a bunch of brands at the same time. You're covering multiple approvals with one application. Some sellers will recognize that as eating two birds with one stone.
3. The Two Methods That Actually Work
There are two real strategies for getting ungated in Beauty. The Amazon-to-Amazon method and the supplier invoice method. Both work. Which one you use depends on where you are in your seller journey.
"I'm going to show you two different strategies to ungate the beauty category. As usual, you can always do the Amazon-to-Amazon method. It's going to work." Chris Mangunza - How to Get Ungated in Beauty, Topicals and Burt's Bees (May 2023)
The Amazon-to-Amazon method is faster and requires zero existing supplier relationships. The invoice method gives you more control and is more reliable for specific brand approvals. Walk through both below and pick the one that fits your situation.
4. The Amazon-to-Amazon Ungating Method Step by Step
This is the fastest route for new sellers. You buy products directly from Amazon.com and use those order confirmations as your proof of purchase when you apply for ungating.
Here's the exact process. Go on Amazon and find a Beauty product that is open to all sellers - not gated at the brand level. Buy at least 10 units. Wait for the order to ship, then pull the order invoice from your account page (not just the receipt confirmation email - the actual invoice PDF).
Then go into Seller Central, find the Beauty category request page, and submit your application with that invoice attached. Amazon reviews it and typically approves within 24-72 hours.
Buy something in the $8-15 per unit range. Ten units at $12 each gives you a $120 invoice that Amazon treats as a real purchasing decision. Token buys at $2 per unit tend to get flagged or ignored.
5. The Supplier Invoice Method for More Control
If you want more control over the process, or the Amazon-to-Amazon method didn't land for a specific brand, the invoice method is your next move. This is how most experienced sellers secure brand-level approvals.
You need an invoice from a legitimate supplier - not a retail store receipt. The invoice must show your business name, the supplier's name and address, and at least 10 units of a product in the Beauty category.
Wholesale directories like Faire or RangeMe are good starting points. Some distributors will issue a proper invoice for small orders if you ask. A net-30 account helps but is not always required for smaller orders.
Check the date on your invoice before you submit anything. Amazon requires the invoice to be dated within the last 180 days. An old invoice from a year ago will get rejected before anyone reads the rest of the application.
6. Getting Ungated in Topicals and Burt's Bees Together
"I'm going to show you how to get ungated in the beauty category, in topicals, and how to ungate great brands like Burt's Bees. You can eat two birds with one stone." Chris Mangunza - How to Get Ungated in Beauty, Topicals and Burt's Bees (May 2023)
Topicals and Burt's Bees are two of the best brand targets once you have category-level access. High name recognition, consistent sales velocity, and solid margins on specific SKUs. I've personally moved thousands of units of Burt's Bees lip balms and hand creams over the years.
For Topicals: get Beauty category approval first, then request brand-level access through Seller Central on any Topicals listing. Amazon will show you exactly what documents they need for that specific brand.
For Burt's Bees: the Amazon-to-Amazon method works here more often than with other brands. Buy 10+ units of a Burt's Bees product from Amazon itself, pull the invoice, and submit it with your brand approval request. Most sellers get through in 48-72 hours using this approach.

Reserve My Free Seat →7. What Documents Amazon Actually Accepts
Amazon is specific about what counts as an acceptable invoice. Get this wrong and your application gets rejected immediately. Here's the checklist:
- A proper invoice (not a receipt, not a packing slip) from a wholesale supplier or distributor
- Your business name must appear on the invoice
- The supplier's name, address, and phone number must be visible and verifiable
- Product quantities must show at least 10 units
- Invoice date must be within the last 180 days
- No alterations or edits of any kind - Amazon checks for modifications
Retail receipts from Target, Walmart, or CVS do not count. They're receipts, not invoices. Amazon will not accept them for the invoice method. That's the entire reason the Amazon-to-Amazon method exists as an alternative path.
If you don't have a supplier yet and don't want to set up a wholesale account, use the Amazon-to-Amazon method first. Get approved, start selling, and build supplier relationships as your revenue grows. See the full breakdown in the Amazon FBA ungating guide for every category's specific requirements.
8. What to Do If Amazon Rejects Your Application
Amazon rejects ungating applications for a handful of common reasons. The invoice doesn't meet requirements, the product on the invoice doesn't match what you're applying to sell, or your account health triggered a flag during review.
Read the rejection email carefully. Amazon usually tells you exactly what was wrong. Fix that specific issue and reapply. Don't resubmit the same exact application hoping a different reviewer approves it.
If account health is the problem, fix that first. Check your Order Defect Rate (needs to be under 1%), Late Shipment Rate (under 4%), and Pre-Fulfillment Cancellation Rate (under 2.5%). All three need to be green before ungating applications go through consistently.
Persistent rejections on the invoice method usually mean the invoice itself has a problem. Call your supplier and ask for a corrected invoice that meets Amazon's requirements. Most suppliers have dealt with this before and know what format works.
9. How Long the Whole Process Takes
The Amazon-to-Amazon method can get you approved in as little as 24 hours after submission. I've seen same-day approvals. In most cases, budget 1-3 business days for the review to complete.
The invoice method takes longer if you need to order from a supplier first. Factor in shipping time, plus 2-5 business days for Amazon's review. Start to finish, plan on 2-3 weeks if you're going the supplier route from scratch.
The smart play: use the Amazon-to-Amazon method for category-level approval right now. Get in the door immediately. Then use the invoice method for specific brand approvals as you identify which brands you want to source from. You don't have to do this sequentially.
10. What to Source First After You Get Approved
Once you're in Beauty, don't freeze up trying to find the perfect product. Start with what you already know: lip care, hand cream, shampoo, face wash. These have the most consistent demand and the clearest sourcing paths.
I target products with at least 30 sales in the last 30 days on Keepa. Under 15 FBA sellers on the listing is ideal when you're getting started. Run everything through the FBA revenue calculator before you buy anything.
On margins: I look for a minimum of $5.00 net after all fees on any Beauty product. $8-12 net per unit is the sweet spot. Don't chase thin margins in Beauty when better opportunities are right there in the same category.
11. How to Scale Your Beauty Sales After the First Order
The first order in any gated category is always the hardest. After that, it's just a sourcing and capital game. You buy more of what sells, skip what doesn't, and expand into new brands as you get comfortable.
Sourcing manually gets slow fast once you're past 20-30 SKUs. I switched to OA sourcing software that surfaces 20+ leads per day and it completely changed how I operate. That's where the scale actually comes from - not from working harder, but from seeing more deals faster.
The other thing that matters is how often you're buying. A lot of sellers treat inventory purchases as a monthly thing. That's too slow. Here's the post I wrote on whether to buy inventory daily - it changed how a lot of my students think about cash flow. And for the broader picture on what it takes to scale past $10K/month, check out how to scale your Amazon FBA business.
