1. The Quick Answer Before I Waste Your Time

If you're doing online arbitrage, neither Helium 10 nor Jungle Scout is what you actually need. Both tools were built for private label sellers who need keyword research and product validation before sinking money into inventory from a manufacturer in China.

That said, pieces of each tool do matter for OA. The Jungle Scout free estimator is legitimately useful. Helium 10's Chrome extension has real data. So the question isn't just "which is better" but "do I even need to pay for either of these?"

I've used both. I do over $100K per month on Amazon, primarily through online arbitrage, so I'm telling you what actually moved the needle for me, not what a sponsored review says.

2. What These Tools Were Actually Built For

Helium 10 and Jungle Scout both launched to serve the private label gold rush. Private label sellers need to know: what keywords are people searching? How many units does a product sell per month? Who are the top competitors? What's the right price point?

Both tools answer those questions extremely well. Helium 10 has Cerebro for reverse ASIN lookup and Black Box for product discovery. Jungle Scout has Product Database, Opportunity Finder, and Keyword Scout. These are serious PL research platforms.

For online arbitrage, you already know the product exists. You're not discovering products from scratch. You're asking: can I buy this thing cheaper somewhere else and flip it on Amazon for a profit? That's a completely different question, and it needs different tools. The full framework is in our complete online arbitrage guide if you want to see how the whole system fits together.

3. Where Jungle Scout Actually Helps OA Sellers

Here's what Jungle Scout has that OA sellers actually use: the free BSR estimator at junglescout.com/estimator. You type in a category and a sales rank, and it gives you an estimated monthly sales volume. That tells you how fast a product moves, which matters a lot when you're deciding how many units to buy.

When I'm sourcing, I want to know if a product with a 15,000 rank in Kitchen is selling 200 units a month or 2,000. Those are very different risk profiles.

"The way I actually like to use it is to go to junglescout.com estimator... on this website for example we can see that this product, we can say that the rank is on average around 3,000 to 3,100." Chris Mangunza, Keepa Tutorial 2024

The estimator is free. You don't need a Jungle Scout subscription to use it. So if that's all you're getting out of Jungle Scout, paying $49-$69/month makes zero sense for an OA seller.

4. Where Jungle Scout Falls Short for OA

Jungle Scout's Chrome extension shows BSR, FBA fees, and competition data on product pages. But SellerAmp and ScoutX do all of that and more, and they're purpose-built for the OA workflow. Jungle Scout is not.

"Jungle Scout is amazing if you are doing private labeling... however, if you are doing online Arbitrage, I know some people use it. I used to use it... for online Arbitrage it's going to be B-tier. It's borderline C to be totally fair." Chris Mangunza, Best Online Arbitrage Software 2023: Tier List

B-tier to C-tier is not a tool you build your business on. You're paying $49-$69/month for a feature set that's either free elsewhere or irrelevant to how OA works. The keyword research suite, the product database, the supplier finder. None of that applies when you're sourcing from retail stores and brand websites.

Jungle Scout also doesn't do IP alerts, restriction checks, or hazmat flags in real time the way OA-specific tools do. Those features save you from expensive mistakes. Missing them costs you money.

5. Where Helium 10 Helps OA Sellers

Helium 10's Xray Chrome extension shows BSR history, FBA fee estimates, revenue estimates, and the number of sellers on a listing. That's useful context when you're deciding whether to buy a product.

Helium 10 also includes a profitability calculator in the extension. You enter your buy cost and it shows estimated net profit. It works fine. It's not as streamlined as SellerAmp, but it gets the job done for quick checks.

If you're doing a mix of OA and wholesale, or if you plan to add private label later, Helium 10 makes more sense as a long-term investment. You'd actually use the keyword tools and listing optimization features at some point. But for pure OA, you're paying for a lot of features you'll never open.

6. Where Helium 10 Falls Short for OA

The main problem with Helium 10 for OA is cost-to-value ratio. Plans start at $39/month for the Starter tier, but you hit limits fast that push you toward the $99/month Platinum plan. That's real money, especially when you're starting out.

The Starter tier caps keyword searches, restricts full Xray access, and limits keyword tracking. If you need Helium 10 at all, you probably need Platinum. At $99/month, you're spending more than most complete OA tool stacks combined.

The interface is designed for PL research. There's a lot of territory you'll never touch as an OA seller. See our full FBA software tier list for a side-by-side look at how these costs stack up against OA-specific alternatives.

7. My Honest Software Tier List for OA Sellers

I've done tool tier lists on my channel and I'll give you the same honest take here. These rankings are specifically for online arbitrage, not PL or wholesale.

Jungle Scout: B-tier. Has the free BSR estimator, decent extension, sometimes useful for wholesale research. Not a priority buy for pure OA. You can get the most useful feature for free.

Helium 10: B-tier to C-tier for OA. The Xray extension is solid. But $99/month for a platform built around features you won't use is hard to justify when you're starting out.

S-tier for OA: Keepa is non-negotiable at around $19/month. Price history, rank history, buy box data. Nothing else comes close. SellerAmp or ScoutX sit right below Keepa for daily workflow. ASIN Gadget is around $70/year one-time and punches above its weight. Build your stack from S-tier down, not from brand recognition up.

8. ScoutX: The Free OA Tool Most Sellers Overlook

ScoutX deserves its own section because it's genuinely shaken up the OA tool market. It's a Chrome extension from InventoryLab. If you already have an InventoryLab subscription (which many FBA sellers do for bookkeeping), ScoutX costs you nothing extra.

"You want to avoid buying products that are going to lose you money. Now, the thing is that you can go way more in depth with Scout X." Chris Mangunza, ScoutX for Beginners: Amazon FBA Profit Calculator

ScoutX calculates your net profit, checks restrictions, shows buy box breakdown, and gives fee estimates right on the source page or Amazon listing. It does most of what SellerAmp does. For sellers already paying for InventoryLab, this is a no-brainer add.

For OA sellers comparing Helium 10 vs Jungle Scout, the honest answer is: ScoutX plus Keepa might be all you need. That stack could cost you nothing extra. Check out our SellerAmp vs ScoutX comparison for the full head-to-head.

9. How to Use the Jungle Scout Estimator Without Paying for Jungle Scout

The Jungle Scout BSR estimator lives at junglescout.com/estimator. It's completely free. You put in the category and the sales rank, and it returns an estimated monthly unit sales number. No account required.

This is useful when you're evaluating a product on Keepa and want a quick velocity estimate. If Keepa shows a sales rank bouncing between 8,000 and 12,000 in Home & Kitchen, plug 10,000 into the estimator and you get a monthly sales figure to work with.

Pair that number with a 90-day rank history on Keepa and you've got a solid picture of whether the product moves fast enough to justify your buy. You're doing real, informed analysis here for the cost of zero dollars. This is why I tell beginners to use the free estimator before ever thinking about a paid Jungle Scout subscription for OA work. Read our Keepa tutorial to see exactly how to combine these two data points in your sourcing process.

10. Pricing Breakdown: What You're Actually Paying

Here's the real cost comparison so you can make an informed call.

  • Jungle Scout Starter: $49/month (monthly) or $29/month (annual). Usage limits apply.
  • Jungle Scout Suite: $69/month (monthly) or $49/month (annual). Full access, but includes PL keyword tools you won't use in OA.
  • Helium 10 Starter: $39/month. Very limited. Most users hit caps quickly.
  • Helium 10 Platinum: $99/month. What you actually need to remove the restrictions.

Compare that to an OA-specific stack:

  • Keepa: ~$19/month. Non-negotiable.
  • SellerAmp: ~$19/month. Or ScoutX free with InventoryLab.
  • ASIN Gadget: ~$70/year (roughly $6/month). Great supplemental tool, one-time payment.

The OA stack runs you around $38-$44/month and is more useful for your daily sourcing than $99/month of Helium 10. If you want to watch me source live with these exact tools, grab a free seat at our Thursday training.

11. When It Does Make Sense to Pay for These Tools

There are real scenarios where paying for Helium 10 or Jungle Scout makes sense, even as an OA seller.

If you're doing wholesale alongside OA, Jungle Scout's product database and sales estimates help you vet potential wholesale accounts before you spend time building supplier relationships. You can verify whether a brand's products actually move on Amazon in a few minutes.

If you're doing OA now but building toward private label, Helium 10 is the better long-term investment. Start learning the keyword tools while you're still cash-flowing from OA, and you'll have a head start when you're ready to launch your first brand.

Jungle Scout also has solid educational content. Their million dollar case study series is genuinely well done and shows the whole PL journey from product research to launch. That training value is real if you're learning the broader FBA game, not just OA.

12. The Verdict: Which One Should OA Sellers Buy?

For a pure online arbitrage seller starting out: buy neither. Put that $49-$99/month into Keepa and SellerAmp (or get ScoutX free through InventoryLab). You'll source better products, avoid more costly mistakes, and keep more cash in your pocket while you're building momentum.

If you have to choose one between Helium 10 and Jungle Scout specifically for OA, Jungle Scout edges it on pure OA utility. But the BSR estimator is free anyway, which undercuts the whole argument for paying. Helium 10 is more powerful overall but overpriced for what an OA seller actually needs from it day to day.

The bigger move is accepting that both tools are built for a different type of Amazon seller. OA has its own software ecosystem. The tools in that ecosystem are cheaper, more focused, and more useful for your actual daily workflow. Run the right tools for the model you're running.
