1. Profit Margin vs ROI
Profit margin is net profit divided by the sale price. Sell for $30, keep $6 after every cost, and your margin is 20%.
ROI is net profit divided by what you paid for the product. Buy for $12, keep $6, and your ROI is 50%.
Same sale, two very different percentages. Margin tells you how much of each sale you keep. ROI tells you how hard your cash works. For an arbitrage seller buying inventory with limited money, ROI and speed decide growth. The math is in the ROI calculation formula.
2. Why Margin Alone Misleads
"Profit margin is irrelevant. But people love talking about profit margins."
$0 to $4 Million With Amazon FBA: The Complete Strategy
A 40% margin on a product that sells once every three months ties up your cash and racks up storage. A 15% margin on a product that sells through in two weeks lets you buy again and again with the same money.
Track margin so you know your costs. Make buy decisions on ROI, profit per unit and how fast it sells.
3. Every Cost Inside Your Margin
- Product cost: what you paid, plus sales tax
- Referral fee: a percentage of the sale price that varies by category. Look up yours on Amazon's referral fee page in Seller Central
- FBA fulfillment fee: per unit, by size and weight
- Storage: monthly, per cubic foot
- Inbound costs: shipping to Amazon, plus a placement fee if you choose a minimal split in Send to Amazon
- Prep and labeling: your time or a prep center's per-unit fee
- Returns: refunds, damaged units and returns processing fees
Every one of these is a line you can measure. The full fee breakdown lives in Amazon FBA fees explained.
4. The 2026 Fulfillment Fee Numbers
For 2026, outside peak season, US fulfillment fees on items priced $10 to $50 run from $3.32 for a small standard item up to 2 oz, to $3.96 for a small standard item at 14 to 16 oz.
Large standard items start at $3.73 up to 4 oz and reach $6.97 at 3 lb, plus $0.08 for each 4 oz above that. On top of the fee, Amazon has added a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge since April 17, 2026.
Check your exact item in the FBA calculator. A few ounces can move a product into the next tier.
5. Storage and Aging Costs
Standard-size storage costs $0.78 per cubic foot per month from January through September and $2.40 from October through December. Oversize runs $0.56 and $1.40.
Aged inventory surcharges start at 181 days and climb with age. Every month a unit sits, its margin shrinks.
Low stock can cost you too. The low-inventory-level fee applies when both your 90-day and 30-day historical days of supply fall under 28.
6. A Worked Example
Made-up numbers to show the method. Use your own from the calculator.
- Sale price: $30.00
- Buy cost with tax: $12.00
- Amazon referral and fulfillment fees from the calculator: $10.00
- Prep center label and handling: $0.50
- Inbound shipping share: $0.60
Net profit: $6.90. Margin: 23%. ROI: 57.5%.
Now say it sits five months instead of five weeks. Add storage for every one of those months and the numbers drop. Run the same product with a 30-day sell-through and you can buy it four or five times in the time the slow version sells once.
7. What's Realistic for a New Seller
You won't find one honest margin number for "Amazon FBA". It depends on category, price, size, how you source and how fast you sell. Set a buy floor instead.
"For the next 30 days, I will be sourcing for online arbitrage daily in front of you guys until I find a profitable online arbitrage product that actually makes money. Okay, so the rules are simple. At least 20% return on investment and it needs to sell."

When you're brand new, your first goal is learning the process with small, safe buys:
"So don't listen to the advice telling you like, 'Yeah, you need to find at least a 30% return on investment and $5 profit,' right? It does not matter, okay? You're not here to make money just yet."

Peak fulfillment fees run from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027. Small standard items cost $3.51 to $4.18 to fulfill in that window. Storage triples for standard items at the same time.
Sales volume goes up in Q4, so the trade can be worth it. Run your Q4 buys at peak fees and peak storage, and plan to sell through before January. The holiday peak fee post has the full table.
9. Margin Killers to Watch
- Price tanks: sellers pile onto a deal and race the buy box down. Check Keepa before you buy
- Slow sellers: storage and aged surcharges eat a thin margin
- Returns: some categories return more than others, and apparel pays a processing fee on each returned unit
- Losing the buy box: an offer that never wins never sells, see how to win the buy box
Most margin problems trace back to one of these. Look there first when a product disappoints.
10. Raise Margin Without Raising Price
Buy lower. Clearance and stacked discounts cut your cost without touching the sale price. The clearance sourcing system and cashback stacking both work here.
Cut prep cost. Compare a prep center's per-unit rate with your own time, using prep center vs DIY prep.
Ship in a way that avoids extra inbound fees. Amazon-optimized splits in Send to Amazon carry no placement fee.
11. Turnover Beats Margin
Fast turnover multiplies the return on the same dollars. Cash that comes back in 30 days can fund another buy before a credit card bill is due.
"It might take you like 25 days to one month to actually, when you spend money, get your money back, right? So once you know that and you know that when you use any credit card on the day that it opens, right, you actually have 50 days, 55 to 60 days to actually pay back that credit card without interest. Guess what? It's a free money glitch."

Pay the card in full and on time, or the interest wipes out the margin you were protecting. The FBA cash flow trap shows what happens when sell-through slows. New to all of this? Start with the how to start Amazon FBA pillar guide.
