1. Clearance Sourcing in Plain Terms

Clearance sourcing means buying products a retailer has marked down to get rid of them, then selling them on Amazon at the normal price. You make money on the gap between the clearance tag and the Amazon buy box.

It works in stores and online. Most big chains run a clearance section on their website, and the same scan-and-verify method applies to both.

A system turns that into a weekly routine you can repeat and hand off. Random clearance hunting produces random results.

2. Why Clearance Holds Its Price on Amazon

"So selling clearance products is one of the best way to actually make a profit and not have your price tank on Amazon, right? For multiple reasons. I talked about that in a couple of videos in the past, right?"

AI Just Killed Online Arbitrage (Here's What FBA Sellers Need Now)

A retailer clearing a product has usually stopped reordering it. Fewer fresh units reach the market, so fewer sellers pile onto the listing and race the price down.

Compare that with a sitewide sale on an item the retailer keeps restocking. Fifty sellers buy the same deal, send it in the same week, and the buy box drops to cost.

"When I started, up to the point where I was doing like I think $35,000 a month, let's say around 80% of my business was just sourcing clearance. Okay, it's the best business model when it comes to scaling fast at the beginning and avoiding price tank."

3. Step 1: Build Your Clearance Source List

Write down every place you can check for markdowns. For stores, list the clearance areas in each location you visit. For websites, bookmark each retailer's clearance and sale pages.

"So every single day, my team go throughs the internet to put together a list of sales, clearance, coupons, any discount they can find online on websites that we can actually source and find profitable products at."

The Arbitrage Strategy That Separates 7-Figure Sellers From Everyone Else

Start with five to ten sources you can cover in a week. The best stores for retail arbitrage ranking gives you an order to test them in.

4. Step 2: Scan Fast, Reject Faster

Clearance shelves hold far more losers than winners. Your speed at saying no decides how many winners you find per hour.

Kill a product in seconds if:

  • No Amazon listing exists, or the listing shows no sales history
  • Amazon itself holds the buy box at a price near your cost
  • The packaging is crushed, opened or missing parts

Scan with the Amazon Seller app or a tool like SellerAmp. Anything that survives the first look gets a Keepa check.

5. Step 3: Read the Keepa Chart Before You Buy

The current Amazon price is a single data point. The Keepa chart shows whether that price holds or spikes for a week and falls back.

Check three lines: the buy box price over 90 days, the sales rank drops (each drop is roughly a sale), and the count of offers. A rising offer count on a clearance item means other sellers found the same markdown.

The Keepa graph tutorial walks through each line if you need a refresher.

6. Step 4: Run the Numbers on Your Real Cost

Your cost includes the clearance price, sales tax, the trip, prep and labeling, shipping to Amazon, Amazon's referral and fulfillment fees, and storage for however long the unit sits.

Two 2026 changes hit this math. Amazon stopped US FBA prep and item labeling on January 1, 2026, so you label your own units or pay a prep center. And since Amazon ended commingling on March 31, 2026, every unit an arbitrage seller sends needs an FNSKU barcode. Budget the label and the labor.

Run it through the FBA calculator before you buy, then hold it against your ROI minimum. For a live walkthrough on real clearance finds, reserve a seat at Thursday's free class.

7. Step 5: Decide How Many Units to Buy

Clearance tempts you to buy the whole shelf. Size the buy to the listing instead.

Take the estimated monthly sales, divide by the number of FBA sellers, and you get your rough share. Buy enough to cover 30 to 60 days of that share on a first purchase. If it sells through fast, you'll know for next time.

The full method is in how many units to buy.

8. Step 6: Ship Fast and Track Days to Sell

Clearance profit shrinks the longer the product sits in your garage. Prep, label and create the shipment in Send to Amazon within a few days of buying.

Once it's live, track days to sell for each buy. Aged inventory surcharges start at 181 days and climb with age, and standard storage costs more from October through December. A clearance item that turns in 30 days beats one with double the margin that sits for six months.

Log store, cost, sale price and days to sell in one sheet. That log tells you which sources to keep.

9. Clearance Traps to Skip

Some markdowns exist for reasons that will cost you:

  • Discontinued for a defect: read recent Amazon reviews for complaints before you buy
  • Short expiration dates: food, supplements and beauty with close dates are hard to sell through in time
  • Gated brands: check eligibility in the Seller app before buying, or the units sit in your house
  • Hazmat items: aerosols, batteries and chemicals may need review, see the hazmat review guide

One more: clearance leftovers from a season that ended last week. You'll wait months for demand to come back while storage fees run. Price that wait into the buy or pass.

10. Scale the System With Help

Once the routine works, split it. A VA can check online clearance pages, scan the results and send you a shortlist that already passed the reject filters. You make the buy decision.

The VA sourcing training guide shows how to write the SOP.

Track the Amazon sellers who keep showing up on your clearance finds too. Arbitrage Stalker, the tool I built for this, alerts you when they add a product, so you see which markdowns other clearance buyers are acting on. For where clearance fits in the whole business, read the online arbitrage pillar guide.
