1. What a Removal Order Does
A removal order tells Amazon to pull units out of a fulfillment center and either ship them back to you or dispose of them. Amazon's remove inventory overview covers the rules.
Amazon ships removals only to you, your warehouse, your supplier or your distributor. It won't ship to PO boxes, and it won't ship to another fulfillment center. You can't use removal inventory to send customer orders or gifts.
For most arbitrage sellers, "your warehouse" means your prep center. That's where most of my removals go.
2. What Removal Costs in 2026
Removal and disposal share one rate card. For standard-size units:
- 0 to 0.5 lb: $0.84 (down from $1.04 on January 15, 2026)
- 0.5 to 1 lb: $1.53
- 1 to 2 lb: $2.27
- Over 2 lb: $2.89 plus $1.06 per pound above 2 lb
Bulky, extra-large and special handling units start at $3.12 for 0 to 1 lb and go up to $14.32 plus $1.06 per pound above 10 lb. Since March 1, 2026, Amazon charges the fee per unit as each unit gets removed, not when you place the order.
3. When Storage Costs More Than Removal
Monthly storage for standard-size units costs $0.78 per cubic foot from January through September and $2.40 from October through December. Aged units pay a surcharge on top of that.
The aged inventory surcharge starts at 181 days: $0.50 per cubic foot for 181 to 210 days, $1.00 for 211 to 240, $1.50 for 241 to 270. Then it jumps to $5.45 at 271 to 300 days, $5.70 at 301 to 330 and $5.90 at 331 to 365. From 366 to 455 days it's $6.90 per cubic foot or $0.30 per unit, whichever is greater. At 456 days and up, $7.90 per cubic foot or $0.35 per unit, whichever is greater.
Run the example. A 1 lb unit at 0.1 cubic feet, aged 275 days, pays $0.545 a month in surcharge on top of storage. Removal costs $1.53 once. If it won't sell in the next three months, pulling it costs less. The aged inventory surcharge guide goes deeper on the bands.
4. The 14th-of-the-Month Deadline
Amazon takes the aged inventory snapshot on the 15th of each month and charges the surcharge around the 18th to the 22nd.
A removal or disposal order submitted by 11:59 pm Pacific on the 14th avoids that month's surcharge on those units. Miss it by a day and you pay for another month.
Put a reminder on the 10th. That gives you four days to review the aged report and submit.
5. Signs It's Time to Pull Inventory
- Units crossing 181 days with no sales in the last 30
- The buy box price dropped below your break-even on Keepa and shows no sign of coming back
- Unfulfillable returns piling up
- A storage-heavy item heading into October, when standard storage goes from $0.78 to $2.40 per cubic foot
- Inventory you can sell faster through another channel
Check your sell-through rate first. A unit that sells once a week is slow and can stay. A unit with no sales in 90 days is a removal candidate.
6. Slow Inventory Is a Cash Problem
"So, it's really really good if like during Q4 you can flip your inventory in two weeks. But if in Q3 it takes you like 90 days to flip the average item in your inventory, that's why your business does not grow. That's why you're stuck."
The TRUTH About Amazon FBA Wholesale (Gurus Lied to You)
Every dollar sitting in a dead unit is a dollar you can't put into a fresh buy. Removal gets that cash moving again, even at a small loss, and moving cash is how you scale on Amazon.
"So when you spend $1 into the business, how long does it take you to turn it into like $1.60? You need to be turned every 30 days."

7. Where to Send Removed Inventory
Send it to your prep center. From there you have four paths:
- Relabel and send it back into FBA with a new shipment in Send to Amazon
- Sell it merchant-fulfilled from the prep center (see FBA vs FBM)
- List it on eBay or another marketplace
- Bundle it into a used or open-box lot
Sending it right back to FBA only makes sense if something changed, like a price recovery or a seasonal window. Otherwise you pay to move the same problem twice.
8. Manual, Automatic and Bulk Removals
Amazon gives you three ways to remove inventory. You can request a return or disposal of any amount at any time. You can set up automatic removals for unsellable and slow-moving inventory. And you can submit bulk removal orders by spreadsheet.
Automatic removals work well for unfulfillable returns. For slow sellable units, I prefer manual: you decide based on the Keepa chart, not a default rule.
Amazon also offers value-recovery options like FBA Liquidations, Amazon Outlet and Sell as Used. Compare what each returns against removal before you pick.
9. What Happens While the Order Processes
Amazon doesn't charge storage fees on units during the removal processing period. Fulfillable units stay for sale until Amazon removes them, so close the listing if you don't want them selling.
Once you create a removal order, you can't change its address. Double-check it before you submit.
Processing slows down in the holiday season, so plan Q4 removals earlier. Amazon can also cancel a removal if units are tied to a pending customer order or sit at a location that doesn't process removals. Canceled units go back to accruing storage.
10. Watch the Low-Inventory-Level Fee
Pulling units lowers your days of supply. Amazon charges the low-inventory-level fee only when both your 90-day and 30-day historical days of supply drop under 28.
Most slow movers won't trigger it. Products that sold fewer than 20 units in the past 7 days are exempt, and so is Grocery. Partial removals on a fast seller are where you need to watch it. The low-inventory-level fee guide covers the tiers.

- Submitting on the 15th and paying another month of surcharge
- Leaving the listing open so units sell while the removal processes
- Sending removals to an address your prep center doesn't expect
- Pulling a fast seller and triggering the low-inventory-level fee
- Removing units and shipping them straight back with nothing changed
Most of these come from rushing. Review the aged report on a schedule and you avoid all five.
