1. How Long to Make Your First Sale on Amazon

There's no fixed number. Your first sale on Amazon FBA lands after six stages: account setup, finding a product, buying it, prepping and labeling it, shipping it in, and getting it checked in and sold. Some of those take a day. Some of them depend on Amazon, your carrier or your prep center.

A lot of you want that first sale before the year is out. Good goal. Break it into stages and you'll see which ones you can speed up and which ones you plan around.

If you haven't opened an account yet, start with the how to start Amazon FBA guide and come back.

2. Stage 1: Account Setup and Verification

You register, pick a selling plan and go through Amazon's identity verification. Amazon controls the pace here. Have your ID, bank statement and business details ready before you start so you don't add delays on your end.

The seller account setup walkthrough covers the forms, and identity verification covers the step that trips up the most people.

Don't buy inventory until your account is approved. Units sitting in your closet while verification drags on are cash you can't use.

3. Stage 2: Finding Your First Product

This is the stage you control most, and the one where new sellers burn the most time. They try advanced methods before they can read a Keepa graph.

"You've been told that if you want to find your first product on Amazon, you should use this tool and look at what other people are selling by scrolling down, going there on their storefront, and stalking what they sell. I'm going to tell you straight up, as a beginner, you are not going to find your first product this way. It's going to be way too hard."

Start with a sale on a retailer website and check products against Amazon one by one. Chris's 2026 method for a first deal starts in the same place:

"This is how you are going to find your first $1,000 of profit as a new Amazon seller in 2026. Okay, so quite simple. What we're going to do to find our first profitable product is we are going to try to find a sale, right?"

4. Pick a First Product That Sells Fast

Your first product sets your timeline more than anything else. A product that sells several times a day on Amazon can sell the day your unit goes live. A product that sells twice a month can sit for weeks.

For a first buy, favor:

  • A strong sales rank in its category (see what counts as a good BSR)
  • A category you're already allowed to sell in, so you skip ungating
  • A buy box price that has held steady in Keepa for the last 90 days

Chris built Arbitrage Stalker, and its free online arbitrage sourcing checklist walks through the profit, demand and competition checks to run before you buy.

5. Skip Ungating for Your First Sale

"And so I know that it's tempting at the beginning to try to ungate, request brand approval for every category, every brand. The truth is you are going to waste your money at the beginning. You should not aim in your first week to make a million dollars."

How I Made 7 Figures on Amazon FBA

Ungating adds a stage with its own wait. For the first sale, stay in open categories and brands. Check every product in the Amazon Seller app or Seller Central before you buy, using how to check if you can sell a product.

Once the first sales are in, ungating becomes worth the effort. The ungating guide covers it.

6. Stage 3: Ordering and Delivery

You buy the product online and it ships to you or to your prep center. The retailer's shipping speed sets this stage. Free standard shipping can take a week. Paid faster shipping cuts days but eats margin.

For a first test buy, ship to your own address so you can see and handle the units yourself. You'll learn what the prep step involves before you pay someone else to do it.

7. Stage 4: Labeling and Building the Shipment

Every unit needs an FNSKU barcode. Amazon ended commingling on March 31, 2026, and you aren't the Brand Representative for the brands you resell, so the manufacturer barcode doesn't cut it. Amazon also stopped US FBA prep and item labeling on January 1, 2026, so you label the units or a prep center does.

Then you build the shipment in Send to Amazon, print the box labels and book the carrier. Your first time through Send to Amazon will be slow. The shipping plan tutorial walks through each screen, and printing FNSKU labels covers the barcode step.

Check bagging and box rules before you seal anything: polybag requirements and box requirements.

8. Stage 5: Transit and Fulfillment Center Check-In

Your boxes travel to the fulfillment center Amazon assigned, then Amazon receives them and makes the units available for sale. You don't control either step. You can watch them in the shipping queue.

Build some slack into your timeline for this stage, because nothing you do speeds it up. If a shipment checks in short, the FBA reimbursement guide covers inbound shipment discrepancies.

9. Stage 6: The Listing Goes Live and Sells

Your offer shows as active once units are available. Now price and demand decide the clock. If your price competes for the buy box on a fast-selling listing, the first order can come within hours. If you priced high or picked a slow product, you wait.

Don't drop your price to the floor out of impatience. Set a reasonable price, give it a few days, and adjust from there. The buy box guide covers how pricing and fulfillment affect who gets the sale.

10. Your First Sale Is a Lesson, Not a Paycheck

"So don't listen to the advice telling you like, 'Yeah, you need to find at least a 30% return on investment and $5 profit,' right? It does not matter, okay? You're not here to make money just yet."

I Tried Every Amazon FBA Ungating Method in 2025: Here's What Actually Works

Your first product teaches you the full loop: research, buy, label, ship, sell. Once you've run it once, the second shipment goes faster and the tenth goes faster still.

If you want to watch the whole loop before you run it, reserve a spot at the free Thursday class and see a real product go from lead to shipment.
