1. Check Eligibility Before You Spend a Dollar
The worst feeling in this business is finding a deal at 50% ROI, buying 20 units, and then learning your account can't list it. Now you own inventory with nowhere to send it.
Checking takes 30 seconds per product. Do it on every lead, before you place the order, and you never get stuck with a box you can't sell. If you're brand new, set up your account first with how to set up an Amazon seller account.
2. Method 1: Search the ASIN in Seller Central
In Seller Central, go to Catalog, then Add Products, and search the ASIN or UPC. Amazon shows the listing along with what your account can do with it.
- A plain option to sell this product means your account can list it in that condition.
- An approval button or a note that listing limitations apply means you're restricted and need approval first.
Check the condition too. Some products only allow New, and some restrictions apply to one condition and not another. For OA you're almost always selling New.
3. Method 2: The Amazon Seller App Scanner
The Amazon Seller app lets you scan a barcode or search a product and see whether your account can sell it. It's the fastest check for retail arbitrage in the aisle, and it works for online leads too if you type the ASIN.
The scanner reads your own account, so the answer is yours, not some general rule. Full walkthrough in using the Amazon Seller app scanner.
4. Category Gates vs Brand Gates
Restrictions come in layers. A category gate covers a whole category, like grocery or topicals. A brand gate covers one brand even inside a category you're approved for. Some single listings carry their own restriction on top.
Approval in a category doesn't mean you can sell every brand in it. Check every ASIN, even after you get ungated. The differences between the big categories are laid out in grocery vs beauty vs toys ungating.
"However, this like if I can sell them at 38.40, nobody's selling on these right now. I'm restricted on this one, but some people can sell, um, ah maybe people got removed from this listing. Let me see. Um, it looks like people got removed from a lot of listing lately."

Eligibility changes. A listing you could sell last month can be restricted today, so recheck before each buy, not once per product.
5. Should You Apply for Approval?
"Okay? And so I know that it's tempting at the beginning to try to ungate, request brand approval for every category, every brand. The truth is you are going to waste your money at the beginning. You should not aim in your first week to make a million dollars."
How I Made 7 Figures on Amazon FBA
Apply for approvals that match products you keep finding. If one brand shows up in your leads every week, it's worth the invoice. If you saw it once, move on.
The process starts in how to get ungated on Amazon, and getting paperwork a retailer will accept is covered in how to get invoices for ungating.
6. When Approval Gets Auto-Declined
"If you get to the point where you get, uh, automatically declined, right? You submit and 3 seconds after it comes back and it declines it. What you do is you go to the live chat, you actually tell them in the live chat, hey, like I'm submitting stuff, but it gets automatically denied."
Can You Still Ungate on Amazon FBA in 2026? Full Strategy Revealed
An instant decline usually means something on your account or the request tripped an automated check. Contact Seller Support with your documents ready and ask what's blocking it, then resubmit.
7. Hazmat and Dangerous Goods
You can be eligible to sell a product and still have trouble sending it to FBA. Aerosols, batteries, some cleaning products and anything flammable can go into hazmat review, and the units can sit stranded until it clears.
Look for a hazmat or dangerous goods flag on the listing in your sourcing tool, and check the Add Products page for warnings. The Amazon hazmat review post covers what happens and how to plan around it. Meltables come with their own seasonal rules, covered in Amazon meltable inventory.
8. Brand and IP Risk
Eligibility only tells you Amazon will let you list. It doesn't tell you whether the brand files complaints against resellers.
"It's going to be a risk for every brand. Um, and the reason why you want to avoid that, by the way, is because when you get IP complaints, it can lead you to get your account suspended, right? And have to submit, uh, all that stuff. It's a headache, right?"
The Last Keepa Tutorial You Will Ever Need
Check the seller count history in Keepa. A listing where sellers vanish all at once can mean the brand cleared resellers off it. Keep invoices for every buy so you can answer a complaint fast. If you hit one, start with the hijacker and listing issues guide and how to appeal a suspension.
9. Variations Can Differ
On listings with sizes, colors or pack counts, check the exact child ASIN you're buying. One variation can be restricted or flagged while the next one isn't.
Match the UPC or model number to the retailer's product before you buy. A mismatch means you check the wrong child, list the wrong item and eat a return.

Most sourcing tools and browser extensions show eligibility next to profit, so you see it before you even open the listing. Use that as the first filter, then confirm in Seller Central for anything you're about to buy in volume.
When you track competitor storefronts, the products they add often sit in categories you're already approved for, since you sell what they sell. I built Arbitrage Stalker's storefront monitoring for that, so take my take on tools with that in mind. The method works with any tool, and it's covered in reverse sourcing on Amazon.
11. The 30-Second Pre-Buy Check
- Seller Central or the Seller app says you can sell it in New.
- The exact child ASIN matches the retailer's UPC or model.
- No hazmat or meltable flag you aren't ready for.
- Keepa shows no sudden seller wipeouts on the listing.
- You'll have an invoice or receipt filed for the buy.
Pass all five and run the numbers. Fail one and move to the next lead. The rest of the beginner path is in Amazon FBA for beginners, step by step.
