1. Why Kohl's Is One of the Most Underrated RA Stores
Most RA sellers drive past Kohl's on the way to TJ Maxx. That's fine with me. Less competition means better finds, faster sourcing, and cleaner buy boxes when the product hits Amazon.
Kohl's runs one of the most predictable clearance markdown cycles in retail. Once you learn the cadence, you can time your trips to hit 60-80% off windows consistently. I've pulled $40-$80 net profit on single items sitting in a clearance bin that most sellers walked right past.
This post covers my full Kohl's clearance strategy: which departments to hit, how to stack Kohl's Cash with discounted gift cards, and how to set up your scanning workflow before you walk in the door. If you want the bigger framework this fits into, start with my complete online arbitrage guide first, then come back here.
2. How Kohl's Clearance Markdowns Actually Work
Kohl's uses a tiered markdown system. Items typically start at 20% off, then cycle to 40%, 60%, and finally 80% off before they get pulled or liquidated. The cycle varies by department and season, but the 50-70% off window is usually the sweet spot for FBA margins.
At 80% off you can find wild ROI, but inventory is thin and the buy box is often already crowded by the time you get there. At 40% off you get more selection but slimmer margins. I target 50-70% off for the best balance of deal quality and inventory depth.
Kohl's marks clearance items with colored tags, and the color rotation changes by store and region. Your first move when you walk in: check the clearance section signage. Some stores post the current markdown color on the endcap, and if they don't, any employee can tell you in 30 seconds.
3. The Best Departments to Hit at Kohl's
Not every department clears well for FBA. Here's where I spend most of my time:
- Kitchen and cookware: Kohl's carries KitchenAid, Cuisinart, and Instant Pot. These clear deep and sell fast on Amazon. A KitchenAid attachment at 60% off can flip for $30-$50 net after fees.
- Bedding and bath: High ticket price means more margin room. A $120 comforter set at 70% off puts your cost at $36 with space to price competitively and still clear $25-$35 net.
- Toys: Strong seasonal clears, especially January post-holidays and late summer. Look for brands that hold their Amazon price through the clearance cycle.
- Small appliances: Coffee makers, air fryers, toasters. These move consistently on Amazon and Kohl's clearances them heavily around major shopping periods.
- Shoes: Harder to source because of size fragmentation, but when you find the right size-brand combination at 70%+ off, the margin is real.
I mostly skip clothing. Too many condition issues, too many return risks, and the Amazon clothing category adds headaches you don't need when you're building a routine. If you want a comparison of how other stores handle clearance, check my breakdown of retail arbitrage at Walmart.
4. The Right Scanning App Setup for Kohl's
You need a scanning app that shows you Amazon price, sales rank, FBA fees, and net profit in under five seconds. Scanning items manually without that data is how you waste two hours and walk out with one unit.
"This is the best app you can use when you are doing Retail Arbitrage because you can actually scan your products and add it to a buy list… and you can import that buy list straight to Inventory.in." Online Arbitrage vs Retail Arbitrage - Which is Better? (Jan 2023)
The key is an app that connects to your inventory management system. Scan the barcode, see the numbers, decide, add to your buy list in-app. By the time you get home your sourcing list is ready for review with no manual data entry.
Set your minimum thresholds before you walk in: I use 30% ROI and $10 net minimum. If a scan doesn't clear both numbers, I pass. The clearance sticker feels like a deal. Your net profit is what actually matters.
For a full breakdown of the tools I actually use, see my post on the best scanning apps for Amazon FBA retail arbitrage.
5. How to Stack Kohl's Cash for Extra Margin
Kohl's Cash is one of the best margin-stacking tools in retail arbitrage and most sellers don't use it correctly. Here's the actual play.
During Kohl's Cash earn periods, Kohl's gives you $10 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 you spend. That's a 20% rebate on future purchases if you time it right. Buy regular-priced items or light clearance during the earn period, then redeem the Kohl's Cash on a separate clearance trip.
I've had sourcing trips where stacking Kohl's Cash on top of 60% off clearance brought my effective discount to 68-72% off retail. On items with a $45-$60 Amazon selling price, that changes the math from "decent margin" to "buy everything you can carry."
The catch: Kohl's Cash has a redemption window, usually two weeks. You have to plan your trips around the earn and spend cycles. Check the current period in the Kohl's app before you go so you don't let $30 in Kohl's Cash expire unused.
6. The Gift Card Discount Play
On top of Kohl's Cash, you can buy discounted Kohl's gift cards to lower your cost basis further. Sites like Raise.com regularly list Kohl's gift cards at 8-12% off face value. That's free margin before you even walk in the door.
"I have 1% cashback on Target, I can get a 3% gift card on Raise.com… when you get to a store you do Retail Arbitrage, you're not just going to look at discounted gift cards because it's like, let's be honest, you're not gonna do that in your car or in the store." Online Arbitrage vs Retail Arbitrage - Which is Better? (Jan 2023)
The point is to set this up before you go. Buy your discounted gift cards the night before your sourcing trip. Stack a credit card cashback offer if one's active. Do it from your couch, not your phone in the Kohl's parking lot.
Stack all four layers: clearance markdown + Kohl's Cash + discounted gift card + credit card cashback. On a $100 retail item, that combination can bring your out-of-pocket cost to $20-$25. Sell for $75 on Amazon, deduct $18 in FBA fees, and you're clearing $32-$37 net on a $22 spend. That's a 145-168% ROI on a single item.
7. What to Skip at Kohl's (And Why It Can Hurt Your Account)
Kohl's is a legitimate retail chain with real receipts and a real corporate structure. That's a good thing for your Amazon account health. But not everything in that clearance bin is safe to source.
"Yes, you're going to do Retail Arbitrage, you are going to try to scale the business, you're going to get some inauthentic comps and your account is going to get suspended. Don't get mad at me. I'm just bringing the message." Retail Arbitrage Will Get Your Amazon FBA Account Suspended (Mar 2024)
The biggest risk at Kohl's: brands with aggressive IP enforcement. Nike, Under Armour, and a handful of others have Amazon brand gates or send IP complaints to third-party sellers even when the product is 100% authentic and you have a Kohl's receipt to prove it. A clean receipt doesn't override a brand gate.
Before you source a brand, check if it's gated in your Seller Central account. Search the ASIN, try to add it to inventory, and look for the "requires approval" message. Don't buy 20 units and find out at home. One gated brand in a cart of clearance items costs you real cash flow.
For the full picture on keeping your account healthy while doing RA, read my post on how to avoid Amazon account suspension.
8. Building Your Buy List Before You Leave the House
Don't just show up at Kohl's and wander the clearance section hoping something scans well. Pull the Kohl's app the night before and check which clearance items are available for store pickup. Many in-store clearance prices also show online, which lets you pre-screen ASINs before you drive anywhere.
Use that list to do advance scanning from home. Look up the ASINs on Amazon, check sales rank, verify the buy box is active and competitive, and flag the ones worth physically confirming in-store. You're doing 60% of your sourcing work before you put on shoes.
This habit cuts my in-store time from 90 minutes down to about 40. More time per day means more store visits per week, and more store visits compounds your sourcing volume fast. Compare your Kohl's approach to how a similar pre-screening system works for retail arbitrage at Target.
9. How to Analyze a Kohl's Find in Under 60 Seconds
When your scanner hits on something, here's the exact check I run:
- Sales rank: If it's outside the top 1% in its category, I need a strong reason to buy. Slow movers tie up cash in FBA storage.
- Buy box price: Is there an active, competitive buy box? If it's suppressed, I skip unless the rank is exceptional.
- Number of FBA sellers: More than 5-6 sellers usually signals a race to the bottom on price. Pull Keepa and check the 90-day price history before committing.
- Net profit after all fees: My scanner calculates this in-app. Under $10 net: pass. $10-$20: look harder. $20+: it goes in the cart.
- Brand gate check: New brand I haven't sold before? Five seconds in Seller Central to verify approval status before I put anything in the cart.
That whole process takes 45-60 seconds per item. Kohl's clearance sections have hundreds of products. Move fast, trust your thresholds, and don't let a flashy price tag override the checklist.
10. Real Numbers From a Kohl's Sourcing Trip
Here's what a solid Kohl's run actually looks like. Not a highlight reel, just a realistic trip.
You spend $180 at the register after stacking a 10% gift card discount and $20 in Kohl's Cash. Effective out-of-pocket: $142 across 8 ASINs in cookware, bedding, and small appliances. Amazon selling price averages $52 per item, FBA fees average $12, and net per unit runs $18-$22 after all costs.
Total units: 14 (a few items you buy 1 of, a couple clean deals you buy 3-4 of). Total net profit after fees: $210-$280. That's on a $142 spend in about 45 minutes of in-store sourcing time.
Not every trip hits those numbers. Some trips you walk out with 4 units and $60 in net profit coming. Some trips you find one kitchen appliance at 72% off that covers three days of spending. Consistency builds as you learn the markdown schedule and which departments in your specific store clear the hardest.
11. How Kohl's Fits Into Your Broader Amazon FBA Strategy
Kohl's retail arbitrage is a real income stream, but it's one piece of a bigger picture. Most sellers in The Scaling Society use RA to generate fast cash flow while they build out their online arbitrage operation in parallel.
OA scales better. You can source from your laptop at midnight and send purchase orders without leaving the house. But RA, specifically store-specific strategies like this Kohl's playbook, trains your product eye faster than anything else. You learn what sells, what doesn't, and how to read a buy box situation before the data tells you to.
