1. What an Inauthentic Complaint Means
An inauthentic complaint says the product you sold isn't genuine. It can come from a buyer who thinks they got a fake, or from a brand that reports listings to Amazon.
It lands in Account Health in Seller Central, usually with the affected ASIN and a request for information. Amazon may pull the listing while it reviews.
For an arbitrage seller who bought real products from real retailers, the job is to prove that with documents. The broader recovery process is in the suspension appeal guide.
2. Don't Quit Over One Complaint
"I've seen people giving up just because they got inauthentic complaints on Amazon without having their account suspended. If you cannot handle like, you have no idea how many inauthentic complaints we have to handle a month. You have no idea."

A complaint is a problem to work, and you can work it. Treat it as a task with steps and a deadline.
Read the notice the same day. The faster you respond with clean documents, the less time the listing stays down.
3. Where These Complaints Come From
Buyer complaints often start with a return. Someone gets packaging that looks different from the photos, an older version of the product, or a damaged box, and picks "not authentic" as the reason.
Brand complaints come in waves. A brand reports a batch of listings at once, and every seller on those listings gets a notice.
"So pretty much what happened is that Amazon, okay, received a report from Nike, right, that some of the listings that a lot of people are selling on Amazon are inauthentic. Okay. So, pretty much what they're doing is they're saying, 'Hey, look, you guys are selling fakes, right?'"

4. The 2026 Labeling Change Helps You
Amazon ended commingling on March 31, 2026. Every seller who isn't the Brand Representative in Brand Registry, including every arbitrage seller, now puts an Amazon barcode (FNSKU) on every unit.
That means the unit a buyer receives traces back to the seller who sent it. Your units are yours. A complaint on your offer is about inventory you can document.
Label every unit correctly. A unit that arrives without a required barcode counts as an inbound defect and loses reimbursement eligibility. The FNSKU label guide and commingled vs sticker cover the details.
5. Step 1: Read the Notice Closely
Note the ASIN, the type of complaint, any deadline, and exactly what documents Amazon asks for. Each notice spells out its own request. Answer that request, not the one you read about in a forum.
Check whether the complaint came from a buyer or a rights owner. A rights owner complaint names the brand and often gives contact details for the person who filed it.
6. Step 2: Pull Your Documents
Gather the purchase record for that ASIN: invoices or order confirmations from the retailer or supplier, the shipping tracking, and the Send to Amazon shipment that carried the units in.
"It's so much easier if you have an issue with one ASIN, you can just go and search up for the ASIN and you'll get all the documentation, all things that you need, all the tracking number. So, it's super easy to actually start building an appeal, right, with all the documents that you need if you have an inauthentic complaint or an IP complaint."

Set this up before you need it. Save every order confirmation in a folder or a sheet keyed by ASIN, so a complaint takes minutes to answer instead of days of digging through email.
7. Step 3: Write a Clear Response
Keep it short and factual. Say where you bought the product, attach the documents that show it, and explain what you'll do to prevent another complaint.
- Source: the retailer or supplier and the order dates
- Proof: the documents Amazon asked for, matching the ASIN and quantity
- Prevention: what you changed, such as inspecting returns before resale or dropping a risky supplier

"So what you need to do, whether it is for ungating or for inauthentic complaint, you need to resubmit. Just resubmit until it goes through. That's it."
Can You Still Ungate on Amazon FBA in 2026? Full Strategy Revealed
A rejection often comes with a short note on what was missing. Fix that one thing and send it again.
Keep a log of each attempt: date, what you sent, what came back. If the issue drags on, that log makes your next response sharper.
9. Rights Owner Complaints Work Differently
When a brand files the complaint, Amazon may want a retraction from the rights owner before it restores the listing. Your documents still matter, but the brand holds a key.
Contact the rights owner politely, show your purchase records, and ask for a retraction. Some brands respond. Some never will, and you may decide to stop selling that brand.
Brands that file often are a sourcing signal. Note them and check before buying again. The restricted brand guide covers brands that close their listings entirely.
10. Lower the Odds of the Next One
- Buy from retailers and suppliers that send clean, itemized order records
- Skip damaged, opened or old-packaging units
- Inspect returns before they go back into sellable stock
- Watch your complaint history by brand and cut brands that keep generating them
Account health also affects your sales. Sellers with clean metrics win the featured offer more often, see how to win the buy box.
Be careful with paid appeal services. Some charge a lot for a response you can write yourself with the steps above. Same goes for paid ungating services.
11. When to Escalate
If complaints stack up across several ASINs, or Amazon restricts your account, treat it as an account-level issue. Work through every open item, and build one plan of action that covers the pattern rather than the single listing.
The suspension appeal guide walks through that process, and the scaling pillar guide shows how account health fits into growing past your first few thousand a month.
