1. What an Ungating Service Sells

An ungating service charges you to get approval for a gated category or brand on your Amazon account. Some file the application for you. Some sell an invoice package you submit yourself. Some sell software that clicks request approval on thousands of ASINs to catch the ones that open without documents.

All of them are selling time savings or access you think you can't get alone. The question is whether the approval is worth the price and the risk to your account.

If you haven't tried the free route yet, start with the Amazon ungating guide.

2. The Three Routes Compared

  • DIY with a wholesale supplier: you buy real inventory, you own the paperwork, you control every submission. Costs inventory money and your time.
  • Done-for-you service: someone else files. Saves time, adds a fee, and often means another person inside your account.
  • Invoice package: a supplier sells you a set quantity of products plus the invoice, sized for an application. Fine when the supplier is real, dangerous when the paperwork is.

The auto-approval click tools sit beside these. They only find approvals Amazon would give you anyway with no documents.

3. Route 1: DIY With a Wholesale Supplier

You open an account with a distributor that carries the brands you want, buy what the application asks for, and submit the invoice yourself.

The inventory isn't wasted. Pick brands with Amazon listings that sell and those units become your first stock in the category. The wholesale sourcing guide covers finding a supplier.

The cost is learning the process once. After that, each new category takes less time.

4. Route 2: Done-for-You Services

A service files the application, handles denials and resubmits. You pay for their time and their experience with the paperwork.

The weak point is access. Never hand over your main Seller Central login. If someone needs to work inside your account, add them as a user with their own login and only the permissions they need, and remove them when the job is done.

Ask where their documents come from. If the answer is vague, walk away.

5. Route 3: Invoice Packages

Some suppliers sell bundles built for ungating: a set of products from a gated brand plus the invoice. When the supplier is a real distributor that ships you real product, this is a faster version of Route 1.

Check the supplier before you pay. Look for a real business address, a phone line that answers, and a history of selling to resellers. Confirm you'll receive the products listed on the invoice.

Brand approvals carry extra risk because brands watch their listings. The restricted brand approval guide covers how those applications differ.

6. The Fake Invoice Problem

"Now the issue with that is that you know people selling fakes are faking invoices. Okay? You're just hurting the sellers that are actually like there's a lot of people like running a business on Nike stuff, right?"

Amazon Sellers PANIC as Nike Sends Copyright Complaints

Some ungating sellers edit invoices or print them for purchases that never happened. Submitting one puts your name on a document that doesn't match a real sale.

That paperwork follows you. If you ever get an inauthentic complaint on that brand, the invoice you used to get approved is the first thing you'd need to stand behind. Only submit documents for products you bought from the company named on them.

7. Don't Pay to Ungate Everything on Day One

"And so I know that it's tempting at the beginning to try to ungate, request brand approval for every category, every brand. The truth is you are going to waste your money at the beginning. You should not aim in your first week to make a million dollar."

Ungate for products you've already found and confirmed are profitable. A category approval with no buy list behind it is money spent on a maybe.

Plenty of ungated products sell well. Build sales there first, then pay to open a category when you have specific ASINs waiting. If you want help picking which gates to open first, bring the question to the free Thursday class.

8. Questions to Ask Before You Pay

  • Is the invoice from a real distributor, in my business name, for products I receive?
  • Do you need access to my account, and with which permissions?
  • If the application gets denied, what happens to my money?
  • Can you show me the supplier's business details before I buy?

A legitimate service answers all four without hesitation. If any answer dodges the question, keep your money.

9. When a Service Makes Sense

A service can earn its fee when your time is worth more than the fee, the documents come from a real supplier, and you already have profitable ASINs waiting behind the gate.

It makes no sense when you're new, have no buy list, and hope the approval will create one. In that spot, the DIY route teaches you the process and leaves you with inventory.

"If you're not able to actually spend $500 to actually get approval to actually sell a brand because you're scared of some products being restricted, whatever, you're scared to actually submit an invoice 50 times, there are some big issues with your business."

10. My Take

I'd do it yourself. You learn the process, you own the paperwork, and you can repeat it for the next category without paying again.

I feel the same about services that sell help with account suspensions:

"I do not really like this service because they're praying on sellers and then they just outsource the work to like random people in the Philippines for really cheap. They make crazy profit on actual suspension."
