1. Grocery Gating in Plain Terms
Amazon restricts some categories and brands until you get approval to sell them. Grocery and Gourmet Food is one of the categories plenty of new sellers find closed when they first scan a product.
There are two layers. The category gate covers grocery as a whole. Brand gates sit on top, so even an approved grocery seller can hit a brand that needs its own approval.
The general ungating playbook is in the Amazon ungating guide. This post covers grocery.
2. Why Grocery Is Worth the Effort
"Or you know what? If we want to make it for beginners, all right, we're going to focus on grocery. Okay, so we're going to select food."
Live Sourcing Session: Finding Arbitrage Gold on Amazon
Grocery sells every day of the year. People reorder snacks, coffee and pantry items, so listings keep steady sales rank instead of spiking for one season.
Products are small and light, which keeps fulfillment and storage costs down. And retailers run grocery sales and clearance constantly, so you always have something to scan.
3. Step 1: Check Your Status on Real Products
Search a few grocery ASINs in Seller Central with Add a Product, or scan them in the Amazon Seller app. Each listing tells you whether you can sell it, or shows a button to request approval.
Test products from five or six different brands. Your account may be open for some and closed for others, and that pattern tells you whether you're facing a category gate or brand gates.
Write down the ASINs and the result for each. You'll use that list in the next step.
4. Step 2: Try the Approval Button First
Click request approval on each restricted ASIN. Some accounts get approved on the spot with no documents. Others see a list of what Amazon wants.
Try it on several brands before you spend a dollar on invoices. An instant approval on one product can open more of the category than you expected.
"What you should expect is that ungating should become easier again. It was the case for the last two years: during Q4, ungating was [hard], and when Q1 came around, it was way easier to actually get ungated, autogate left and right."
The Biggest Q1 Mistakes Amazon Sellers Make
Approvals that stay closed in one season can open in another. Re-test your list every few weeks.
5. Step 3: Read the Requirements on Your Application
Amazon shows the document requirements inside the application for your account. Read them on the screen in front of you instead of trusting a forum post from two years ago. Requirements change, and they can differ by account.
Make your documents match the application line by line: the products, the quantities and the business details it asks for. A mismatch is the easiest denial to avoid.
Brand-level approvals work the same way. The restricted brand approval guide covers that side.
6. Step 4: Get Documents From a Real Supplier
If the application asks for invoices, buy from a wholesale supplier that sells the brands you applied for. Order the products and quantities the application calls for and keep the paperwork clean.
Use a supplier you would buy from again. The units you order for ungating become inventory, so pick brands with Amazon listings that sell.
The wholesale sourcing guide covers finding and vetting suppliers. Never submit a document for a purchase you didn't make.
7. Step 5: Resubmit Until It Clears
A denial is a normal step in this process. Tweak the submission and send it again.
"Once you have all the documentation, just submit and keep submitting and tweak it a little bit like you can submit 16 times in 10 days. In 10 days, your stuff should be back, right?"

"If you get to the point where you get automatically declined, right? You submit and 3 seconds after it comes back and it declines it. What you do is you go to the live chat, you actually tell them in the live chat, hey, like I'm submitting stuff, but it gets automatically denied."

Grocery has its own handling rules. Read Amazon's FBA requirements for expiration-dated products in Seller Central help before your first shipment, and check that each unit has enough shelf life left to sell through.
Chocolate, gummies and other heat-sensitive items fall under meltable rules. The meltable inventory guide covers what that means for timing.
One fee break: Amazon exempts Grocery from the low-inventory-level fee. Details in the low-inventory-level fee post.
9. Sourcing Grocery Once You're In
Start with brand sales and clearance at big-box stores and their websites. The clearance sourcing system and the best stores ranking both apply here.
"So, you can list on this. I mean, yeah, that's profit, but like it's really not moving that fast for you. You're competing with Amazon Fresh. You're going to get some sales."
Online Arbitrage Strategy That Actually Makes Money | Day 7 of Sourcing Everyday
Check who you're up against on each listing. If Amazon sells the product itself, expect slower sales for your offer and price your buy around that.
10. Grocery Ungating Mistakes
- Buying inventory before you confirm you can list it
- Ordering ungating units from brands with no Amazon sales
- Giving up after the first denial
- Sending products with short expiration dates
Each one costs money or weeks. The broader list is in beginner online arbitrage mistakes, and the full business model lives in the online arbitrage pillar guide.
